Description of Events

Samuel Hines Workshop
“Creating an Individualized Technical Practice Approach”
Technical work lies at the heart of practice for any serious musician. Students are correctly told they need to practice technique but are often overwhelmed with choices and have a difficult time narrowing down what seems to be a never-ending list. Do we practice scales 2 hours-a-day like Segovia insisted? How much time should we devote to technique without taking all available practice time? With this workshop we will present a process that allows you to diagnose what your needs are and choose productive exercises that efficiently develop your playing.

Prof. Eddie Healy Workshop
Theory Class - Part I
“The Devil is in the Details: How Music Theory Can Fuel Better Musical Interpretations”
While studying music theory may be good mental exercise, it’s true value lies in what it enables one to understand about what makes music really tick! If we understand more about how the music we intend to play is structured, we can create more effective and more compelling interpretations of it. In this 3-part class we will first take a deep dive into the structure of a well-known piece of guitar music, and then spend time discussing how what we have discovered about it will enable us to bring what is especially interesting about the music to the fore in our expression!
